My hair growth after chemo in a timeline with pictures

“Your hair is growing back so fast! What have you been doing?!” I’ve been getting this question a lot in my DMs on Instagram so I figured I’d share the things that have worked for me here in a blog post to make sharing easier.

I was diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer in July 2019 and my treatment plan required that I have 16 rounds of chemotherapy which would make me lose my hair. I was so devastated about it and I’m so glad it’s growing back now. Here’s the full story of my breast cancer journey, losing all of my hair, and growing it back again.

16 Rounds of Chemo

On September 5th, 2019 I had my first dose of chemotherapy. I was prescribed 16 rounds of chemo altogether and 4 of those rounds would be with the harsh drugs Adriamycin and Cytoxan.

Adriamycin is nicknamed “The Red Devil”. It’s the strongest chemotherapy drug you can receive. It attacks the fast-growing cells in your body in order to kill the cancerous tumor, but that also means it kills your beautiful hair.

This part of the cancer journey is one of the hardest to go through. Just 18 short days after the first round of chemo my hair was falling out in chunks. I knew it was going to happen, but it was still hard.

On September 23rd I shaved my head.

I used this time to play with wigs and have any kind of hair I wanted; pink, blue, rainbow, or long & blond like the old me. I started matching my hair to my mood or by which one went best with my outfit.

It was the perfect time to try out colorful hair. The pink hair was my favorite and everyone always complimented me on it. They were shocked when I told them it was a wig! ๐Ÿ™‚

Blue Hair Don’t Care

So I made the most out of it and kept it as fun as possible. You have to do whatever you need to do to keep things fun during this time. It’s super easy to get depressed, so do whatever makes you feel good.

Some women feel more empowered when they rock a bald head. If that’s you, then go for it! I found being bald wasn’t for me. It was cold, made me feel worse about myself, and I felt very manly. Being a very feminine woman, I felt way more confident having some kind of hair.

This is such a personal preference, and I’ve seen it work both ways. There is no right or wrong way. Do what makes YOU feel your best during this time!

In December 2019 my hair started to sprout. I was a little surprised when I saw it one day since I was still getting treated with chemotherapy. I had moved on to a drug called Taxol which typically causes hair loss also, but not as much as the Adriamycin.

On December 13th I graduated from the Mr. Clean stage to the Chia Pet stage. If you look closely you can see my peach fuzz. ๐Ÿ™‚

Stimulating Hair Growth After Chemo

I was pretty excited just to see a little sprout or two. As soon as I saw growth, I started taking supplements to stimulate my hair growth after chemo and help it along.

A few friends suggested collagen, but collagen comes from animals. Ever since my diagnosis, I’ve tried to decrease animal foods where I can because of medical reasons.

I searched for vegan collagen and realized it didn’t exist. What DID exist was organic collagen support. I started using Organifi Glow Collagen Support which stimulates your own collagen production naturally. It has 13 potent superfoods that hydrate skin, build collagen, and repair DNA. It also helped hydrate my skin and come back to normal after the chemo dried me out so it was a win/win. If you want to try it for yourself, you can save 15% off your purchase with discount code: KAMELIA. I took 1 scoop per day every single morning.

On December 19th I started using Monat products on my little sprouts. There wasn’t much hair to shampoo or condition at first, so I’d use more of the spray and the Rejuvenique Oil to start with. Once my hair came in a bit more, I used the shampoo and conditioner, leaving it on for a while in the shower before rinsing it off. Monat products are clean and are made with 13 natural plants and essential oils rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants.

My last round of chemo was on January 18, 2020. Just over a month later, I had quite a bit of hair, despite the fact that I had still been on chemo for the whole month!

Here’s a photo from January 22, 2020. I called this “The Handsome Young Man” phase. hehe ๐Ÿ™‚

Now that I was done with chemo I was allowed to have more greens and antioxidants so I started drinking Oragnifi Green Juice every single day. Your hair is a direct reflection of how nourished your body is. When you’re full of vitamins and nutrients it grows so much faster. Organifi green juice has chlorella in it and 10 other superfoods to support your immune system and help stimulate hair growth after chemo. You can use discount code KAMELIA for 15% off of this one too.

On March 1st, my hair was coming in even more. It moved into the mini pixie phase. This is when I added Biotin to my regimen. I took 2 of these a day.

It also started growing a lot faster now that I wasn’t getting chemo anymore. My eyebrows and eyelashes were starting to grow back around this time too. I still wore eyelash strips for a while because my own lashes grew back unevenly for a bit. I was finally starting to feel a bit more feminine again which was nice. ๐Ÿ™‚

April 1st, it was a little longer.

May 1st, it was even longer and I had to have it cut a bit so it would keep a shape.

June 1st, I saw a lot of new growth and I started researching when I’d be able to get extensions.

In July 2020, my hair was finally long enough to get extensions, and I was soo excited! Everyone loved my hair being short, but I just never really felt like myself. I love and accept myself just as I am and I’m especially thankful to be alive. But I really did miss having the hairstyle that I was used to, and I was tired of wearing wigs.

In July 2020, my good friend Michelle Lee worked her magic and made me feel like myself again with a full set of hair extensions! She’s been doing extensions for over 20 years and even teaches classes on it, so I knew I could trust her to do an amazing job. She did a custom mix of extensions for the most natural look and as you can see below, I’m delighted with the results!!!

I feel like this is the next phase of getting my life back. It’s been such a long road and I’m so grateful to get back to feeling like myself.

If you’re looking for someone to help you with extensions, you can call or text Michelle at 858-333-9006. She’s based here in San Diego, but she can travel to you wherever you are in the world.

I’ll be writing a blog post all about getting extensions soon, so message me on Instagram if you have any questions and I’ll add them to the post!
